Fantastic Fest 2023: The Toxic Avenger — A Rip-Roaring Reboot That Nails The Troma Vibe

Fantastic Fest kicks off this year’s festival with the world premiere of Macon Blair’s The Toxic Avenger. This is a studio reimagining of the 1984 Troma cult classic that is totally true to its vibe but also moves in its own direction. The film is a great homage with a fresh twist that’s wonderfully wacky, extremely gory, and absolutely hysterical. If you’re anything like us, you will be delighted to see the Toxic Avenger make his return!

65: A Silly, Family-Friendly Sci-Fi Actioner With A Bit Of Bite

The filmmaking duo behind Haunt (2019), Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, pivot from horror to sci-fi/fantasy in their latest flick, 65. The film brings a futuristic edge and a time travel plot to the prehistoric period, pitting Adam Driver against dinosaurs in a lightly tense family-focused race-against-the clock thriller. It’s nothing new or particularly exciting, but it’s enjoyable enough dumb-fun.

Prey: A Prequel Reboot That Proves There's More Neon Green Blood To Be Spilled

With Prey, he sets his sights on the Predator franchise, and he proves there’s still neon-green blood to be spilled. With a badass protagonist and some entertaining thrills, the film marks the closest the franchise has ever come to capture the glory of the original.

Bullet Train: A Sluggish Actioner With Straight-To-Streaming Energy

Director David Leitch returns with the comedy action flick Bullet Train. The film takes audiences on a bumpy and sluggish ride full of messy mayhem and gratuitous flashbacks. About the only funny thing about it is how Pitt becomes a literal passenger in more than one sense.
